ABOUT ME
Imagine me at 14 years old, painful acne all over my face. Well intentioned relatives were suggesting soaps and smelly herbal pastes to put on my face. My hair was constantly oily. I had to wash it every single day. I couldn’t do well in school because I was always so tired. I had no energy to pursue any extra-curricular activities and hobbies. This took a huge toll on my self-confidence. I was scrawny… a short-little girl with no flesh on her bones. My parents were constantly told how I need to eat more to put on weight or swim or do yoga to increase my height. Well, I ate more than enough. 5 parathas per meal, would you believe it? A glass of full-fat bhains ka dhoodh. Yuck.
I was diagnosed with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) at 18 years old. As is the protocol, I was given contraceptive pills, metformin, a pill for reducing androgen (male) hormones and some multi-vitamins. This treatment continued for the next 12 years on and off. Now I had put on weight, my hair had thinned considerably and I was more underconfident. I also started facing some anxiety which later was something I couldn’t control.
At 30 years of age, I was constantly trying to keep myself calm and failing. My periods were still irregular, I still had acne and hair thinning. Nothing was getting better.
So, to recap for a second, I had:
-
Irregular periods
-
Insulin resistance
-
Acne
-
Hair thinning
-
Anxiety
-
High Testosterone & DHT
-
Lack of energy
-
Loss of confidence
-
Brain fog
-
Musculoskeletal spasms in my neck and upper back
Now at this time I had decided that I can’t live my life like this. I was only 30. This couldn’t be the quality of my life, could it? I made some big changes. Really big. Starting with quitting my job.
Then I focused all my energy into researching PCOS, insulin resistance and metabolic disorders. We were now living in the times of Instagram. One thing led to another and soon I went down the rabbit-hole of scientific papers, podcasts and books. More and more and more information. I was insatiable.
I made changes to my lifestyle, particularly nutrition and fitness. It took 2 years but here’s what happened:
-
Periods were like clockwork- 28 days
-
PMS cramping went away. Completely.
-
No more acne
-
Insulin PP came down from 138 to 10.
-
More energy
-
Muscle building
-
No more spasms
-
Anxiety reduced significantly
-
No more brain fog
-
Increased confidence
-
Better aesthetics and I now feel comfortable in my body.
-
Physical strength – I’m tiny but you should see me deadlift
-
Mental resilience
And I did NONE OF IT through diet plans. It took me 2 whole years. I haven’t regained any weight, not even a 100gms. In fact, I’ve continued to lose body fat slowly but surely.
